Seven youth and two adult leaders went on an urban immersion experience in a Latino neighborhood of Hollywood June 14-20. This coordinated weeklong trip challenged us to “see the face of God in the city.”
Our photos and videos will show you more about who we are, what we did, and our $1 dinner adventure.
WHO WE ARE
DINNER FOR $1
.
The challenge: feed yourself dinner for $1.
The situation: a group of Palo Alto middle school students are given a dollar each and sent into the streets of LA one night. How will this group fare? Will the one with a dairy allergy get enough to eat? What about the vegetarian?
The trip was organized by DOOR (Discovering Opportunities in Outreach and Reflection), a faith-based network of urban service-learning programs that expose, educate, challenge, and motivate participants to respond to the issues and concerns facing an increasingly urban world.
We worked with agencies that combat homelessness, one of LA’s biggest challenges, doing hands-on tasks like sorting donated coats or painting a house. We volunteered in the community, participated in reflection, worshipped together, considered how faith shapes our group's responses to needs in our home community and discover service as an essential, daily part of living out Christian faith. DOOR partners with agencies that have age-appropriate work for middle school students, such as shelters, WorldVision, or Habitat for Humanity’s housing restoration project, a program targeted to middle schoolers. We shared our experiences in worship on June 28. We are grateful for your prayers on the journey: for strength in work, peace in rest, laughter in new relationships, and love for your people.
