Telling Their Stories

Just as we shared stories of those we lost on September 11th, people all over Afghanistan shared stories with us of the people killed and injured during the coalition bombing campaigns. Coalition forces took great care not to harm innocent people, but the Taliban hid among them and used their homes as launching points. Plus, some coalition bombs simply missed their targets, not many, but enough.

The House Fell Down

She was in the kitchen, preparing tea for the family, when the coalition bombs struck. The kitchen was separate from the rest of the house so she didn't know how bad it really was until she crawled out of what was left of the kitchen and saw utter destruction. Her mother, her brothers, her sisters, her cousins, and her aunt and uncle were all killed. 16 people, gone in an instant. Her father was buried alive, but rescuers got him out. He is very ill, emotionally and physically, and can not provide for his daughter. Another 8-year-old having to be the bread-winner for the family. The Taliban were nowhere near this house. It was one of the rare times that coalition bombs truly missed their mark.

Survey Teams

The people we met were anxious to tell their stories. The survey teams from Global Exchange have done a fantastic job reaching these people and gathering their information. Men, women, and children all over Afghanistan need emotional, medical, and financial assistance to begin the process of rebuilding their lives.
