Since 2008 First Pres has been hosting Hotel de Zink—a rotating shelter program operated by Life Moves—during the month of July. Palo Alto’s only shelter program for adult men and women, it’s named after a Palo Alto police officer during the Great Depression who opened the police station on cold and rainy nights to let people come in and sleep. The program now serves 12-18 homeless men and women who are working to achieve stable housing and runs at 12 mid-Peninsula churches throughout the year.
Clients arrive by 7pm to have dinner and then sleep at the church; they leave by 7 am the next morning after having breakfast and the opportunity to pack a lunch. Our congregation signs up to bring dinners and we have a faithful team who arrive by 6am to prepare and serve breakfast. The “hotel” is a special experience for everyone involved.
