Rev. Geoff Browning’s Presentation and resources to Stop Line 3

Treaty People Gathering and Opportunities for Action

We are all “treaty” people. That is just one of the things I learned on my trip to northern Minnesota in solidarity with indigenous leaders. Yes, the Anishinaabe people made several treaties with the US government in the 19th century, but we all have a responsibility to uphold those treaties now; we are all bound by the terms and conditions of those treaties, which have the force of law.

Anishinaabe leaders call all people of faith and goodwill to join them in resisting the construction of a pipeline that will bring more dirty tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada, to the Great Lakes. Line 3 is a clear danger to our climate, water, and land in Minnesota and would undermine the Indigenous treaty rights of the Anishinaabe people.

Climate scientists warn that we must keep the vast majority of known fossil fuels reserves in the ground and drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions before 2030. Climate scientist John Abraham has shown that building Line 3 would be the climate change equivalent of 50 coal plants. This project would cost society $287 billion in climate impacts in its first 30 years of operation. That risk is unacceptable. Simply put, no one can be a leader on climate change and support this project — a choice must be made.

You don’t have to travel to Minnesota to help. You can help by calling President Biden and letting him know that Line 3 must be stopped. Right now, the Biden administration is defending the Trump administration’s authorization for a building permit. That is just unacceptable.

Call the White House and Climate Office of Gina McCarthy by dialing: 888-724-8946. Tell them: “President Biden must honor the treaties and protect our climate by stopping the Line 3 tar sands pipeline now. He should also stop every other fossil fuel project and honor the treaties made with Indigenous peoples.”

If you want to do more, you can check out this document for a list of resources and actions that you can take.

With gratitude for you all, Rev. Geoff Browning Parish Associate
